To solve this problem, you must first know the formula for finding the average is Average = Sum of terms / Number of terms.

If you simply try to add the old average and the last test score, that would give the last score as much weight as the previous 6 tests. The best way to deal with problems of changing averages is to use the sums.

To find the sum of the previous 6 tests, multiple the average (83) by the number of tests (6):

83 x 6 = 498

Then, add the 7th score and divide by the total number of tests (7):

498 + 97 = 595

595 / 7 = 85

The answer is D) 85.
