The Veterans Education Assistance Program (VEAP) was an optional contributory program that would match your $1 contribution with a $2 payout. You could receive benefits for up to 36 months (depending on the number of months you contributed) and is available for up to 10 years after your discharge. If you have not used your contributions before 10 years elapse, you will be refunded your contribution.
Requirements for VEAP Benefits
To be eligible for VEAP benefits, you must meet the following requirements:
Join (for the first time) between Jan. 1, 1977, and June 30, 1985, and opened an account before April 1, 1987
Contribute more than $25
Complete your first period of service and be discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
What can VEAP benefits be used for
VEAP benefits can be used for almost all education-related needs. Some of the acceptable uses of VEAP are:
Technical or vocational school
You must contact the VA before planning to use VEAP benefits, however, since each program must be approved.
