The first step is to find out requirements for taking the GED test in your area. While requirements differ from state-to-state, the follow requirements are universal:
- You must be at least 16 years old
- You should NOT be enrolled in high school or have a diploma from any secondary school
For requirements for your individual state, you can visit the Jurisdiction Testing Policies on the American Council for Education (ACE) website.
Policies vary between states, so make sure to check out the requirements BEFORE signing up for a test. Some states require registration and retesting fees, some require you to take preparatory courses or the Official Practice Exam.
The GED test itself follows the same format no matter the state, which will be explained in Step 4 - Taking the Test.
