Established in 1909, the original location of Walter Reed Medical Center was originally the General Hospital at Washington Barracks. Since 1909 Walter Reed has been a premier care provider, not only serving soldiers and their families but also members of the Congress as well as the President and Vice-President.
In 2005 the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) recommended replacing Walter Reed Army Medical Center with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and moving the facilities to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. This move was completed in 2011.
