Originally founded in 1880, Picatinny Arsenal was known as the Picatinny Powder Depot, and kept that name until 1907. In addition to a name change, 1907 also began the addition of research facilities and a school for weaponry sciences. During World War I and II the arsenal expanded its footprint, eventually encompassing 6,400 acres and manufacturing ammunition around the clock.
Today, in addition to leading the way in researching and manufacturing ammunition for the US military, Picatinny Arsenal is also the headquarters of the US Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, and home to the US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Directorate.
