Some info on being an MP

You can find some info on the requirements of becoming an MP here on the site at this page or look here for the other specialties in the Military Police Corps.

Enlistment While in H.S.

You can start the enlistment process while you're still in school. Your Rcruiter can make a Reservation for you for MOS 31B, MP & you have up to a year to ship to basic training. You'll know exactly when you'll leave & where you'll be going. Meanwhile you'll be in the Delayed Entry Program & if you get involved in the Future Soldier Training Program you can enter the Army one rank higher as a PV2, E-2 for a few extra bucks in your paycheck each month.

The MOS of MP is not a requirement to become a Police Officer. Any MOS will work. It's the military experience that counts. Most of the PDs in my area prefer their POs not to have been MPs but rather in the Combat Arms for some reason. The job of a Military MP is altogether different than a civilian PO. Most Army installations are policed by civilian oficers who are employees of the Dept. of the Army.

My son was an Infantryman with the 3rd Ranger Battalion & has just gotten his associate degree in Criminal Justice all paid for by the government. He has several applications in to local PDs & has tested & he's now waiting to be interviewed. One of them is as a SWAT Team member & with his Ranger training they want him if they can find an open slot soon.

Check in with a Recruiter & get the ball rolling. If you wait until you graduate you'll have a lot of competition for slots with all the other graduates. At least listen to what he has to say. No obligations.

Senior Bonus? College?

I have no knowledge about senior bonus checks. That's what Recruiters are for. I didn't even realize that the Army was still giving any bonuses at all. I've heard of a few small ones for certain MOSs so please enlighten me when you find out. Things change all the time, though.

I really don't know what you mean about going to "a college of choice". I thought you wanted to join the Army. If you mean that you want to go to college after you get out of the Army for the GI Bill so it's paid for by the government then you would need to find out which colleges are acceptable. All community colleges & state universities are covered I believe. Many tech & vocational schools, too. It's the private ones you have to watch out for. When that time comes then you'll have to find out. A VA Counselor will tell you. Many times Soldiers take courses online & residential courses close to their Army post on their own time & off duty & the Army will pay for it. Army duty takes precedence, though. That comes first. You won't be excused from duty to attend classes. At that time you'll find out which ones are acceptable.

Combat?

If you don't want to go into combat then don't enlist!! There are no "safe" MOSs! You'll be a Soldier & a Warrior first regardless what you do in the Army.

There have been instances where even administrative people get to go on patrols, pull gate guard duty & convoy security duty. MPs in the Army are used mainly for patrolling & in this war there is no place where you're absolutely secure. You WILL get deployed. As an MP you WILL see combat.

Youn HAVE heard of IEDs & RPG attacks, haven't you?

I have no idea what your concept of being in a fighting force is.

I'm sorry to be blunt but to imply that you want to be in an armed force but don't want to fight the enemy is beyond me.

To Recap

All you have to do is turn 17 years of age, graduate from H.S. & see a Recruiter, in that order. Simple, no?

I might add that you have can't have had any trouble with the law & keep your nose clean meanwhile.
