Im 17 got two brothers in Afghanistan. I will be going into 11th grade. Will i need to get college credits? When should I sign up? I know i want the option 40 contract for a 68w i believe it is. I want to be a combat medic! Is that hard to get? What kind of grades will i need to have in High School to be able to join? And i would plan on joining when i am 18.
Thanks for your time!

Both are very doable. Whether you can get both at the time you want to enlist is unknown. Contact a Recruiter. You can sign up & be in delayed entry for a year or so, at least until you graduate. That way you can wait until 68W Option 40 is available before you sign the papers.

RE: grades

You're only required to have a high school diploma, a GED with 15 college credits or sometimes only a GED. Grades don't matter. No college is required with a HS diploma. If you decide to get some college credits before you enlist or are waiting to ship it can only help you in your military career but it's not necessary. College credits become somewhat important when going into the Senior NCO ranks & they will give you promotion points for all ranks.

At this time it's hard to predict what Army policy will be when you're ready to enlist. They change often according to the needs of the Army. When the Army needs Soldiers it's easier to enlist. It might be altogether different than what policies were there when your brothers joined.

HS diploma & enlisting

To be in delayed entry you only need to be within a year (or so) of HS graduation & be enrolled in a school that will get you a diploma. If you fail to get a diploma you'll be removed from delayed entry. You must be at least 17 (with parent's permission). In your case since you're first entering your Junior year you'll have to wait until the school year is over or a year before you actually graduate.

I don't think the Active Duty Army has a split option - BCT between your junior & senior years. I think the Reserve & National Guard still has the split option.

Contact a Recruiter after your junior year is finished. You can enlist about a year before you graduate. You'll be involved in the Future Soldier Training Program & will do an online course that will get you a stripe PV2,E-2, before you even ship if you pass the PT test & you'll be working out with your Recruiter to get yourself in shape. I've heard it's lots of fun. You'll learn a lot about the Army & will be better prepared for basic.

Any help will be greatfull.

I just recently sighned my first round of papers for the army. Now I was in the FSP program and had a problem with my knee. Wen't to my doctor and he said it was called "It" something along the line with the tendion and the knee. Now I presented this info to my recruter and he sent my paper work up to meps. I was told that they tend to dq people for having knee issues. I was cleared from my doctor and have been running on it with no issues since I bought a pair of running shoes. I also ran ten miles for the first time running in years. That is what caused the injury. My question is will they even send me up to meps to get checked out or is this a perminant disqualifaction that I will be told by my recruiter when he hears back from meps? Thanks for any help you can provide.

There's no telling what MEPS will do. I don't have an answer for you but if your personal physician gave you a complete clearance & feels that it will never happen again the MEPS doc will more than likely go with that.

Thanks MSG

Yeah now it's a waiting game to hear back from meps as long as I can hope to see the doc at meps and be able to explain what happen. Bad shoes and not running for a long time.

Good running shoes are important...

...as you found out. With any exercise that you haven't done in a long time or never it's always best to go into it gradually. Never force your body to do something that might cause injury.

Good luck at MEPS & keep me updated.

Re: 12N & BCT

Good job! I always tell people to try to get Airborne in their contract. Could that be because I was a Paratrooper?

Keep in touch when you can.

When you get to Airborne School always remember that the instructors are always called "SGT Airborne".

Airborne!
