Although I have a job selected since MEPS, would it be possible to switch MOSs before I report to basic in October? I'm worried something will come up that I'd really be interested in and won't get a chance at it.

While it's possible...

...it's not recommended. You've signed a contract although it's not real binding. You would have to contact your Recruiter, take a trip to MEPS, officially drop out & start all over again. Once you drop out of DEP it's anybody's guess when you'd have a chance to pick a new MOS unless you waited until the one you want becomes available. By that time your Recruiter might be too busy to bother with someone that he can't trust. He already has time invested in you & now you've just doubled that time. That happened to someone I know & he never did get in again. His choice which was available a few days after he signed his first contract was not given to him & after waiting for it to open again a lot of time had passed. I forget which MOS it was but it wasn't a real common one. He gave up & to this day he's sorry he didn't go in right away with the contract he had with the hopes that he could get his second, more desirable MOS, at re-enlistment time.

Army Recruiter should be back on soon & he can probably tell you about his experiences with DEP drops.

What MSG said is correct!

What MSG said is correct! It's highly recommended that you don't do that! You got a good job and I would stick with it! When you opt out of your contract your starting all over ship date and all.

Thanks

Thank you both for the info. I was just unsure of pretty much everything when it comes to this mos. I hadn't done any research on it until I chose it. I swear I'm not trying to be difficult, it's just a very big decision to choose any mos, much less one you know nothing about. However, I do believe I'll enjoy my choice and it's just one step closer to ocs.

No problem at all that's what

No problem at all that's what this place is for. You should be able to ask as many questions as you want and not get hassled! Just don't ask same thing tons of times and you are good!

Bad past mistake and don't want to be discouraged

Next Tuesday I will be going down to pick my job and swear in. They gave me a waiver for my dwai that I had years ago and I was just wondering MSG Glenn if you would know what kind of jobs that would be available to me. My recruiter said they will be giving me the list of jobs when I'm at the meps office I want to be able to join the infantry or air assault. Would I be able to do either?

Ok so you can do nothing in

Ok so you can do nothing in the medical field, MP, or aviation. Each job has a list of requirements for it and off the top of my head I know that you can not have an alcohol charge for any of those. You can still get a clearance depending on how long ago it was.

Infantry can be one of the easier MOSs to get into at times. A number of years ago when my son was in the process of enlisting he got a late start that summer because of his civilian job & had to wait until January, about 4 months, to find an Infantry slot. Of course he wanted the Ranger option with his contract but I'm pretty sure it was Infantry that he had to wait for, not Ranger.

There are no Air Assault enlistment contracts. Air Assault is not an MOS. If you're assigned to an Air Assault unit you'll be sent to Air Assault School. If your first duty assignment is at Ft. Campbell you have a good chance of going to AAS. There are Airborne contracts, though. That would be Option 4. Your contract would read "11X Option 4". If you require a waiver to enlist you probably won't be able to get an Airborne contract. I know for a fact that the Rangers aren't accepting people with waivers.

I have no list of open MOSs. I'm retired from the Army so all I can go by is what other people tell me about their experiences. MOS lists change often. What's open today may be closed tomorrow. With high school & college graduations happening now they can go very fast because of the number of people trying to enlist. You might have to choose an MOS that you really don't want if your main goal is to get in the Army.

I suggest that you contact a Recruiter soon. He can answer your questions & start the enlistment process. Meanwhile study for the ASVAB. The higher your score the more opportunities you'll have.
