So what I want to be is sort of an on-the-ground medic. I'd be a soldier just like the other soldiers but I am a medic as well. Does this sound like a type of job in the army. If so, how would I go about becoming one? Right now I plan to get my Bachelor's degree in Science, then if the military can train me from there to be what I'm describing, I'll join then. But do I have to go to medical school first and complete it, or will the army train me after my 4-year college degree? Someone please help

The MOS you're looking for is 68W, Health Care Specialist also commonly referred to as a Combat Medic although it's possible you'll be working in a hospital or clinic.

The Army can help you with your advance education in several ways up to & including sending you to Medical School to become a physician. The requirements are strict - you must have held a GPA of B- at a minimum.

Army doctors don't normally go out in the field like Medics do.

With your bachelors degree you'll enter the Army as a SPC E-4.

See a Recruiter or better yet an AMEDD Recruiter for details.

The AMEDD Recruiter can help

The AMEDD Recruiter can help you once you're accepted into a program to become a Medical Doctor, Registered Nurse, Psychiatrist/Psychologist or similar. If you want to enlist as a medic it requires no prior training - just go to the recruiter and tell him that's what you want. I've been a medic for 17 years, and I just returned from Iraq - I'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have.

Good Luck!

You can still be a Health Care Specialist, though. All 68Ws don't serve in the field all the time male or female. If that's the type of work you want don't let that hold you back.

The closest thing a female Soldier can get to Combat Arms jobs is MP. You can also become a helicopter pilot. That's a Warrant Officer position & you can go to Warrant Officer Flight Training (WOFT) right off the streets as an enlistment option.

Doc, Grunt Medic TXANG, the poster above has been a medic for quite some time. He can give you all kinds of information on training options in the field of medicine. But to serve in a combat situation with troops is out I'm afraid. Even so, that's still a possibility for any Medic under certain conditions.

Female medics cannot be

Female medics cannot be assigned to units that have a direct combat mission - they can, however, be assigned to all other units. Women can and do serve with all units in the current theaters of operations with the exception of Special Operations Forces. One female medic earned the Silver Star for bravery under fire in Afghanistan awhile ago.
