Hi my name is Qinia, I'm 23 and soon to be 24 on the 21st of September!!! I want to join the Army Reserve so I can make something of myself and go to school and earn myself a degree. I have to Become something in the eyes of my mother and family most importantly myself. I have a GED what do I need to do to go foward with my journey of making a career in the military?
With a GED only you'll have to get 15 college credits to be eligible to enlist in the Army. It's either a H.S. diploma or GED +15 at this time. I've covered this countless times before in these forums.
If you want to continue your education I suggest that you see a Recruiter & ask him about going is an Active Duty Soldier after you get those college credits. You'll get more educational benefits that way & you can always go into a Reserve unit after your active duty time. You also more of a choice of MOSs (Army jobs) that way. If you go into the Reserves right away you can only chose an MOS that the Reserve unit has a need for & open slots.
A Recruiter can give you information on both Reserve & Regular Army & show you the differences between them. If you want to go into the Army National Guard, another Reserve Component of the Army, you'll have to see a Guard Recruiter. Sometimes the National Guard has different policies than the Reserve or Regular Army. It's possible they're accepting those with GEDs. And who knows? Maybe the policy will change for GEDs. Only a Recruiter can tell you for sure.
