If for some reason I lose my civilian job does it affect me if I apply for unemployment till I ship out?

It won't affect your DEP contract whatsoever. Many join the Army because they're unemployed. Of course you'd have to stop collecting UC as soon as you entered the Army. There was a time when they could even request an earlier ship date but I don't think that will happen any time soon. Usually ship dates are 5-7 months out. The reason for that is that the BCT & AIT classes are filled.

Collecting unemployment in NY

Make this quick - do I have to still apply for jobs while I collect unemployment tell I leave for boot camp? Jan 2nd is my ship date. By the way I signed my papers Tuesday and my job will be 12n airborne QUALIFIED!!! Tuesday there where 14 spots left.

Definitely call your UC Office about that. I couldn't even guess what the rules are for DEPers.

I can give an opinion - my feelings are that you would still have to apply for jobs (2 per week?) as long as you're collecting UC. I doubt if anyone would hire you because of your military commitment but there are temporary & seasonal job possibilities & that's what UC will probably tell you.

When you get an answer (good luck trying to get a hold of a real person) get back on here with any info you might get from them. I'm sure UC rules vary from state to state, though.

What some do while on UC...

...is to make telephone calls or internet contacts with possible employment opportunities. They choose those they apply to that they know aren't hiring. When they tell you that they aren't hiring then those are the ones they list on their job search log. Of course those unemployed people who don't really want a job until their benefits are close to running out are the ones that do that. Two job searches a week & I'm sure you can find 2 that aren't hiring.

When you contact the UC Office ask them if doing anything pertaining to DEP would count as a reason not to work. You have a job waiting for you & it would be senseless for an employer to hire you & train you only to have you leave in a few months. That might also be another thing you can tell a job search employer. I'll bet they won't hire you unless the job is part time or as a fill-in or seasonal like a lifeguard.
