I met the body fat/bmi requirements this morning and got the paperwork to complete in order to reserve my MOS (35P) and basic would be in Benning on Aug. 6!

Congratulations, Bpeebles82!

That gives you 3 months to prepare yourself mentally & physically. Plenty of time. Although it's not necessary to be able to pass the APFT before you leave or even be in any kind of shape it sure makes BCT easier. Those that leave it to their Drill SGT to get them there are usually sorry they did, lol. You shouldn't have any problems there. I'm not sure if BCT at Benning is the same as the BCT of Infantry OSUT is but I guess it isn't. Although it's been a few years since I instructed at any BCT or OSUT I've found that Infantry OSUT was the hardest followed closely by 13B OSUT.

Have you considered asking for an Option 4 Airborne contract? You won't know if any are available for 35P probably until you get to MEPS to work out your contract. It's even possible that an Option 40 is available.

I am glad I get that time to prepare. I am well on the way to meeting the APFT requirements for graduation already. I will train hard now so bct won't be as tough. Thanks for your input. My recruiter said I would most likely favor Benning over Sill, so I'm thankful I get to train closer to home.

I'm not sure about the Option 4 for 35P. I asked him last week and he said it's very possible that it would be. What's an option 40?

I'm sorry - an Option 40 is a Ranger contract. It automatically includes Airborne School. It's a really, really tough course known as Ranger Assessment & Selection Program, RASP & if you're not in shape now don't even bother. You almost need an APFT score of 300 (270 minimum) just to make it through the first day at RASP otherwise you're dropped. Don't rely on your Airborne qualification to get you in an Airborne unit if that happens. As of recently Airborne units weren't accepting RASP or Special Forces dropouts.

If you decide to try to get an Airborne Option 4 throw in some pull-ups while doing your preparatory PT. That's part of the Airborne PT test. Otherwise it's not a real tough school. If you can pass the APFT with something more than the bare minimums it's not too bad at all. Even those with a fear of heights don't have a big problem as it's a different perspective from 1250'. I was Airborne almost my full military career & never had a mishap other than a few bumps & scrapes, very minor. I've gotten hurt worse stumbling on a stairway or tripping on a rock.

I think Airborne qualification & assignment to an Airborne unit like the 82nd would give you some pretty interesting assignments.

Thanks for the clarification. I know for a fact I cannot make a 270 yet. However, in time I know I can. Just may not be enough time. But I am fairly interested in Airborne. I don't have a fear of heights and I actually think it would be a blast.

I have been doing a few pull ups during my time getting ready. What do you mean by "interesting" when linked up to the 82nd?

RE: "Interesting"

I didn't mean anything in particular it's just that those in non-Combat Arms MOSs that came over to the Airborne Army said that their job was "more interesting" since they got there. More field time? Jumping a lot? Cooler missions? I really can't say.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if you meant it sarcastically or not. But it does seem like I would get out more if I take that route.

While on jump status...

...you'll receive $150 a month extra pay. That alone can be an incentive.

What is jump status? I've read as long as you pass the AB training you'll receive additional pay each month. Is this right?

That's a negative, Bpeebles

Just wearing jump wings doesn't qualify you for jump pay. You have to be in an Airborne unit on jump status & perform a certain amount of jumps while on jump status. You should get jump pay for the month you're at Airborne School. There's always an outside chance that you'll be assigned to a non-Airborne unit even though you're jump qualified. In that case you wouldn't receive jump pay anymore.

When I was in G-3 (plans & operations) we had to piggy-back with line units making jumps to keep drawing jump pay. When my son was an Airborne Ranger they had to make up all their jumps they missed when they got back from deployment. Their deployments didn't include any parachute ops. That was no problem because their non-deployment time was spent training in tasks they weren't doing in Iraq or Afghanistan. Parachuting was one of them. They also did waterborne training, jungle training, airfield seizure, etc. - everything they had to be ready for in case their normal mission was changed or they were deployed to a different type of war.

Oh no way? I am going to Benning at the exact same time frame, for the exact same MOS. Send me a PM OP and maybe we can talk a bit.

@ Chad Fritts regarding Bpeeble82

Bpeebles82 is no longer going in as a 35P but as a 68W. He must have forgotten to update this thread. He ships 20121009 to Ft. Jackson for BCT.
