Culinary Degree

I am currently a student at Le Cordon Bleu. I would very much like to join the military after school but I was wondering if a degree in culinary arts would be of any use in the military.

You'll have to see a

You'll have to see a Recruiter about that. I don't know if that's one of the educational institues that is accredited for you to get an OCS contract or if you can even go in for that field. If you were to go in as an enlisted person I'd recommend MOS 92G, Food Service Operations. As an officer I have no idea what your degree would translate to or even if you could get it. At most Army installations civilian cooks are used.

If your branch of the school

If your branch of the school is regionally accredited (many branches of LCB are not) then your credits are worth promotion points, and a degree may qualify you to enter at an advanced rank. If you enlist as a cook or hospital dietary tech, a culinary degree may well halp you. Be advised, though, that more and more the Army is contracting with civilian agencies to feed the troops, both in garrison and while deployed. The good news is that if you enlist for a job that requires a clearance and it is granted, that when you leave the Army there are a LOT of positions for security cleared people to run those dining facilities - again, both in the States and overseas. Your recruiter can definitively answer these questions.

Good luck!

Chef?

While there is no MOS for chef there is for Food Service Operations (cook), MOS 92G. As far as I know there are no civilian "chefs" that work for the Army. After 27 years I never met one. We had civilian as well as Soldier cooks that handled our food service at Army posts in a messhall environment but no chefs.

The Army needs their cooks to be able to travel with them on deployments when there are no civilians that can do the job or that can be trusted. If you're a cook for the 82nd Airborne Division for instance, you would also need to be parachute trained like anyone else. You could be cooking at a combat outpost, messhall, or field kitchen, whereever the troops are.

Enlist with an MOS 92G, Food Service Operations contract.

Se a Recruiter about openings in that MOS. As of a few days ago I heard of someone being offered it.
