I'm a 27 year old male. I have thought about joining the army since i was 18. I don't have any felonies but i do have some priors. I had got a pot charge in 98, and have 2 DWI's(2009) and currently on probation. I also have another open case that is depending for DWI and driving while revoked(2010). Is there any way for me to get a waiver on these or have i already ruined my change on joining?
I'm afraid with that pot charge you won't be allowed to enlist even with waivers. I have a feeling that even without that you might not be able to get in with all of your other offenses. Even if you would somehow be able to get waivers you wouldn't be able to join until all of your penaltes are satisfied - fines paid, court dates completed, jail time, probation completed. You can't have anything pending.
It's possible that sometime in the future the Army might be granting waivers for some legal problems but I don't think that drug charges will ever be waiverable.
all right well i was just wondering cause my friend had joined the navy a few years back, and one of his class mates had 2 felony charges and they where able to waive them so he could join and to his knowledge(as of last week) the guy is still in the navy.
Several years ago things were a lot different. The economy was good & jobs were plentiful. Old history. Now there are long lines at Recruiting offices. The Army can be very selective of who they enlist. The standards are a lot stiffer.
I really can't say what the Navy does. Different branch. For all I know they might still have that policy. That's up to them. I only know about Army Recruiting. The Army isn't approving very many waivers these days medical or legal. Any drug charge is an automatic DQ.
Contact a Recruiter to be sure. Policy changes often depending on the needs of the Army. I can predict what he'll say. Make me a liar.
