Established in 1941, shortly before the US entered World War II. Fort Polk was used as the location for the "Louisiana Maneuvers", a large-scale training exercises over 3,400 square miles involving over 500,000 soldiers from August-September in 1941. During the wars in Korea and Vietnam Fort Polk was again used as an infantry training center, with it's humid climate and dense vegetation providing ample substitute for the jungles.

Today Fort Polk houses the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), which provides highly realistic combined arms conflict across a wide range of environments.

Camp Keyes was established in 1882, overlooking the city of Augusta, Maine. Containing approximately 70 acres, Camp Keyes was used as a training area during WWI and WWII, and also housed POWs during WWII.

Today Camp Keyes houses the 240th Regiment Regional Training Institute, as well as facilities for training National Guard units stationed throughout Maine as well as other state and federal agencies.

Fort Devens was established in 1917, originally to train infantry soldiers for World War I, and performed the same function for World War II, while also being used as a POW camp.

Fort Devens was closed in 1996, and some of the former base was converted into housing, a business park, various restaurants, schools, and even a hotel. The entire Fort Devens was never shut down however, and the base (which had been a Reserve Training Center) was renamed Fort Devens in 2007. It still features nearly 5,000 acres, and is home to almost 3,000 soldiers plus family members.

Camp Edwards is the home of the Massachusetts National Guard, the 104th Army National Guard Regiment, the 26th Infantry Division and the 101st Field Artillery Regiment. Also present at Camp Edwards is the Regional Training Institute for the 101st Regiment, a Battle Simulation Center, a Live-Fire Shoot House, in addition to other training facilities to support the soldiers stationed at Camp Edward.

Fort Custer was built in 1917 to train and demobilize soldiers during World War I. Fort Custer was also used heavily during World War II, and trained soldiers of the 5th Infantry Division, as well as serving as a POW camp for captured German soldiers.

Fort Custer is currently one of the most heavily used training facilities in the Midwest. It is not only used by the Michigan National Guard, but also by other branches of the armed services, and by soldiers from surrounding states.

Camp Grayling is the primary training center for the Michigan Army National Guard. It is the largest National Guard training site in the nation, and also hosts training for Navy, Air Force, and Marine Reserve and Active units.

Camp Grayling facilities include Grayling Army Airfield, which is capable of handling aircraft up to the size of a C-130, ranges for all manners of small arms, maneuver areas, as well as training sites for cargo/air drops, land navigation and urban assault facilities.

Camp Ripley is a 53,000 acre facility used by members of the Minnesota National Guard, as well as other state and federal agencies. In addition to small arms ranges, Camp Ripley also features demolition ranges, facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), navigation ranges, drop zones for airborne assault training, as well as a host of other training aids.

Camp Shelby is a 136,000 acre facility consisting of enough maneuver space to allow battalion-size units to train in large-scale situations. This camp regularly hosts joint training from National Guard and Reserve units from Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.
