How Is Entitlement Use Calculated If You Only Go to School Part-time?

Q:  I served in the Air Force from 1984 until retirement 1 Aug 2009. I have two questions: Under the Post 9/11 GI Bill I have 36 months of eligibility...how do they measure the 36 months? If I attend one 3-month long semester and take 1 class, is that considered 3-months of my eligibility? If I did not ever sign up and pay the $1200 for VEAP, and never paid anything into the MGIB, am I still eligible for the MGIB? I called the VA and they think I might be, but I have seen nothing on the VA website that supports that. Thanks.

Can I Get What GI Bill Money I Don't Use Back in Cash?

Q: Hello, I was wondering what happens if you go to school and do not use all of your GI Bill money and have some left over. Will the remains be given to you in cash or is this money just available for going to school only?

A: If you are authorized just the Montgomery GI Bill and you don’t use all your months of benefit, then whatever is left expires at the end of 10-years from your date of discharge and you can't get it back as cash.

With a General Discharge, Which GI Bill Benefits Will I Keep?

Q: I will be receiving a general discharge for pattern of misconduct. I served 5 yr. active, 2 deployments and have disability claims. What benefits will I keep especially GI Bill?

A: I can’t talk to all your benefits, but I can from my specialty, which is education. With a general discharge, you will not be able to use your GI Bill education entitlement. However, you do have an avenue of appeal.

Can I Use My Post 9/11 GI Bill to Pay Off My Student Loans?

Q: Hello, I am currently serving enlisted in the Navy. I joined a year ago, already having a bachelors degree and government student loans from achieving this. I accepted no enlistment bonus, nor was I informed of a tuition repayment program at enlistment. Is there any way that I can use my Post 9/11 GI Bill to pay for the loans I have already acquired? Thanks.
