According to the White House, about 1 in 6 soldiers returning Iraq or Afghanistan suffers from either Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). While most nurses in the Veterans Affairs program are familiar with the signs and symptoms of these diseases, many returning veterans receive treatment outside the VA system.
Under this new initiative, more than 3 million nurses will receive training in how to ID and respond to those soldiers who may be suffering from these diseases. As a part of this program, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association has developed online courses dealing with pain management, sleep disturbances and other PTSD/TBI issues - other groups are expected to unveil similar programs soon.
