How Much Will My Parent's GI Bill Give Me to Go to School?

Hi, I’m getting ready to attend college and I want to know how much my parents GI Bill will give me if I attend Georgia Medical College (MCG) in Augusta?

First of all, at least one of your parents has to have the Post 9/11 GI Bill before they can transfer education benefits to you to use. So if they have a different GI Bill, there isn’t anything to give you. The second part of that is if they have the Post 9/11 GI Bill, they have to still be serving and make a transfer request provided they meet the transfer option eligibility requirements. The requirements are having served for at least six years on active duty and reenlisting for an additional four years.

If they are no longer on active duty, and they did not make a transfer request to you while they were active, then they can’t make one now. So the bottom line is if you do not already have Post 9/11 GI Bill transferred benefits, you don’t have education benefits to use to go to school. If either or both of your parents are still on active duty and meet the transfer eligibility requirements, then they could make a transfer request so you would have some education benefits.
