With a General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge, Do I Still Qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill?

Q: I was discharged out of Navy on 07/12/2010 with General under Honorable Conditions. In 2004, I reenlisted and before I reenlisted I was discharged with Honorable. My question is do I still qualify for a Post 9/11 GI Bill? And if I'm qualified, what kind of paper work do I have to show? Thanks.

A: The issue will be you will have to prove your first term was Honorable. It should have been recorded that way on your DD-214, but I'm finding out it is getting missed by the Admin folks and the servicmeembers aren't catching it either when revieiiwing their DD-214s.

What you can do is try to get your character-of-service upgraded to fully Honorable. Start by filling out DD Form 293 and send it to the Navy Board of Corrections. It will take about six months to get a ruling. The other option would be to get your first term of service added to your DD-214 as Honorable.
