Torque is a twisting twisting force.

Unlike a pushing or pulling, torque has an angular momentum component, which can make work easier or harder, depending on the specific work trying to be done.

Imagine pushing a heavy moving box from the center (which moves the box forward) and from one corner (which would cause the box to spin more than move forward). Pushing the corner of the box is applying torque.
