First things first - when you get a question with multiple aspects (in this case, James wants both 72 ounces of beans and the cheapest price), you can often eliminate some answers pretty easily by seeing which don't conform to both aspects.

In this case, only answers C) and D) even add up to 72 ounces - so both A) and B) should not even be considered.

Multiplying the per-can price of C) and D) to get up to the required 72 ounces is the only other step to complete the problem.

6 x $0.39 = $2.34 and 3 x $0.79 = 2.37

Six 12-ounce cans, or answer C) is the answer.
